Please see my telegram No. 4 of the 4th instant,

I have received the following details from Canton :-

Peking, January 7, 1908.

His Majesty's Consul-General has signed with Viceroy's Secretaries, on behalf of his Excellency, an Agreement whereby "compensation" of 6,000 dollars, and 17,790 taels will be paid on behalf of sufferers in "Sainam" outrage; payment to His Majesty's Consul-General of this sum is promised in a few days' time. On our part we agree to withdraw the increased patrol, section by section, according as Admiral Li is ready to take efficient charge of each section thus abandoned.
